Technical SEO for Beginners: The Foundation That Makes Everything Else Work
Watch the full walkthrough · Episode 4 of the SEO in Action series
You can have the best content in your niche and still rank nowhere — if Google can't reach it, read it, or load it quickly on a phone. That's what technical SEO takes care of. Think of your website like a house: before you decorate it with content, the foundation has to be stable.
Technical SEO sounds intimidating, but the fundamentals are very manageable — and most of them are handled through tools and plugins rather than code. In this guide (and the video above) I'll cover the pieces that actually matter for a beginner. New to SEO? Start with the SEO basics guide.
What Technical SEO Is (and Isn't)
Technical SEO is everything that helps search engines discover, crawl, index and serve your site quickly and securely. It's the infrastructure layer — separate from on-page SEO, which optimises the content itself. The two work together: technical SEO gets Google to the page, on-page SEO makes the page worth ranking.
One thing it isn't: the place where you explain what your pages are about. If you want the full picture of how Google discovers and indexes a site, that's covered in how SEO works for beginners — here we focus on keeping the machine healthy.
HTTPS & Security
An SSL certificate turns your site from http into secure https. It's a confirmed (if lightweight) ranking signal, it protects your visitors' data, and without it browsers can label your site "not secure" — which quietly costs you trust and clicks. Install and renew your SSL, fix any mixed-content warnings, and keep your platform and plugins updated.
Crawlability & Indexability
Before a page can rank it has to be crawled and then indexed. Two quick checks catch most problems: make sure important pages aren't accidentally set to noindex, and make sure your canonical tags point to the correct preferred URL so Google doesn't get confused by duplicates. Submit a sitemap (below) to help crawlers find everything, and use Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool to confirm a page is actually indexed.

Mobile-First Readiness
Google predominantly uses the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking, so mobile isn't optional. Check that your design is responsive, that text is readable without zooming, that tap targets aren't cramped, and that key actions and navigation work comfortably on a small screen. If it's awkward on your phone, it's awkward for Google too.

Run the Free SEO Page Audit →Sitemaps & Robots.txt
A sitemap is a list of your important URLs that helps Google discover and prioritise them — submit it in Search Console. Your robots.txt file tells crawlers which areas they may or may not access. Between them, they shape how efficiently Google moves through your site. Most WordPress SEO plugins generate and manage both for you, so this is usually a setup-once task.
Healthy Site Architecture
A healthy structure is easy for both people and bots to navigate: clean, readable URLs; no long redirect chains; and no duplicate or thin pages competing with each other. Good internal linking (a core on-page habit) reinforces this by giving every page a clear path in.

What is technical SEO?
Technical SEO is the work that makes sure search engines can discover, crawl, index and serve your site quickly and securely on any device. It's the infrastructure layer beneath your content.
Do I need to know how to code to do technical SEO?
Mostly no. Many technical tasks — submitting a sitemap, checking mobile-friendliness, fixing indexing settings — are handled through tools and plugins like Rank Math or Yoast. Deeper work can get technical, but the basics don't require coding.
What's the difference between technical and on-page SEO?
Technical SEO makes sure Google can reach and read your pages. On-page SEO optimises what's on those pages — titles, headings, content and links. You need both.
Is HTTPS a ranking factor?
Yes, HTTPS is a confirmed lightweight ranking signal, and just as importantly it builds trust and protects your visitors. A site without it can be flagged as "not secure" in the browser.
